You ask that as if it matters. It's impossible to know the actual
impacts of such a leak. But that's not the issue.

The real point is: Why did no heads roll over the very open fact that
Security was ignored by the very people that were supposed to protect
American secrets? Even Gene Kasperky warned the American Government that
it was being hacked. His reward... They cancelled his Antivirus
contracts. As for that weirdo Manning and an actual patriotic whistle
blower Snowden...We would still be in the dark about the travesty
inflicted on us by our own government. We have the best educated and
best paid experts in the world and they were all asleep at the Helm.
Maybe a few years in a Marine Brig or Federal non-country club prison is
in order for the minor ones and execution for the major foul ups.Julius
Assange should be applauded for his actions. It has made a lot of
American useless and corrupt politicians very nervous and that is why
they want him locked away from all outside communications. It tends to
make one wonder how many are traitors for a few measly dollars.

The real issue is that an enlisted man would never see the light of day
again if he failed to protect America's secrets. It is time to make it
that tough on our Bureaucrats and Pols. A few executed Congressman would
change the tide. No one is above the law!

It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard
the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all
ages who mean to govern well, but *They mean to govern*. They promise to
be good masters, *but they mean to be masters*. Daniel Webster

It does because the prosecution will have to convince a jury that
Assange needs imprisoning. He is telling the public that he is a hero, a
modern Robin Hood who robs the Government to help the poor (public). The
classification system was being used to hide naughty actions of the US
Government. Revealing secrets makes that killed someone makes him a
moustache twisting villain.

He's not going to be tried for 'revealing secrets'. The chargeable
crime is if he encouraged, conspired with, or aided Manning in the
theft of classified material and/or that he SHOULD HAVE KNOWN the
material was stolen when Manning gave it to him.

that only lawyers will care about the difference.

I suspect anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of law will
understand the difference. You see, we don't have anything like an
Official Secrets Act here so there is no law against people who do not
have clearances revealing such information. On the flip side, those
of us who had clearances at the time were specifically told that us
looking at the information would be illegal (because we weren't
cleared for that information).

On the other hand, encouraging or conspiring with people who DO have
clearances in order to get them to divulge information IS against the
law. After the whole Pentagon Papers thing, they also put in place a
law to make it against the law to receive classified information if a
reasonable person would know that they are receiving it from the
person who stole it. Note that this still doesn't preclude one
uncleared person from getting the information from another uncleared
person.
