It's the same anti-Israeli thing that comes around, under different names.
I could go into details but it would not make any difference.
Oh, I know ... I know ... These are among the first posts that I delete.

Having said that, I can understand the anger that some people in the world
feel towards Israel ... but blaming Israel for all the world's ills is
getting old. Really old.

Col. (ret'd) Billzz. Besides saying that it's nice seeing you again, I have
a question. Why is it that the Palestinians are considered (from what I
understand) the n*ggers of the Arab world. I hate that N word, btw. Up
here in canuckistan people from my generation have lived under threat of
having our mouths washed out with soap if we say it. But I digress.

Another point I would like to make. Just because someone is a retired
General doesn't - IMHO - make him the ultimate authority on world affairs.
But people - from the Right and Left - will quote retired Generals as if
these same Generals were sitting on the right (or left) side of G*d.

The term "Palestine" was introduced by the Romans when they expelled the
ancient Hebrews. It was to commemorate the ancient foes of the Hebrews, the
Philistines. Jerusalem was also renamed, but it did not stick.

There has never been any Palestinians, or any Palestinian state. It is a
recent "thing." (And I compress centuries into some few paragraphs.) The
"coastal Arabs" as opposed to the "inland Arabs" (I am really simplifying)
had a big problem as they were not recognized by anyone and so the PLO went
from Lebanon (where they tried a revolt and it was put down) to Jordan
(where they tried a revolt and it was put down) to northern Africa, and
somehow they were allowed back into Gaza. Whew! What a short history that
has left a lot of things out.

So now they have no Palestinian Electric Company, because they really,
really, believe that they are going to kick all the Jews out and get
everything! (Short version.)

The Saudis limit them ( I think 300,000) because they are afraid, and so do
the Jordanians, and I don't have to tell you about Lebanon where they just
crushed another uprising - and didn't even blame it on the Israelis - this
time.)

I have been there three times (one was a real US government trip - and I met
Sadat and Begin and the Crown Prince of Jordan and the Palestinian mayor of
Behlehem, and the refugee camps, and whatever) and other trips to our
friends in Egypt and Israel.

We have hosted Egyptian generals in our house, and Israelis, and even to the
wedding of our son.

We are still clueless.

This ancient enmity defies all common sense.

I won't comment upon the so-called general, who left the US Army to go to
the GA National Guard, and who has as a line in his resume that he attended
a course at the National War College, since I am a graduate of the National
War College. I think that he is a poseur.

But what the hell do I know.

Yeah, I've done the multi-culturalism thingy too at various times with
interesting feedback.

Anyway, despite the fact that I rarely watch teevee, I made a point of
watching Christiane Amanpour's special - which ran for 3 consecutive nights
on CNN - God's Warriors, in which she tries to explain the historical
references which divide the Christian/Jewish/Muslim world, and why there is
no easy answer. I find her work to be excellent.

No easy answers, Colonel, no easy answers.

It's the same anti-Israeli thing that comes around, under different
names.
Besides saying that it's nice seeing you again, I
have a question. Why is it that the Palestinians are considered (from
what I understand) the n*ggers of the Arab world. I hate that N word,
btw. Up here in canuckistan people from my generation have lived under
threat of having our mouths washed out with soap if we say it. But I
digress.
Another point I would like to make. Just because someone is a retired
General doesn't - IMHO - make him the ultimate authority on world affairs.

Guns decide who owns the land and what the land shall be named. Ask
the American Indians . The rise of Zionism, a political movement
started in Europe and Russia in the 19th century seeking to create a
Jews homeland in PALESTINE. There is no such thing as a rightful
homeland or a chosen people.

For a long time demographers estimated that by 2010 the number of
Christian and Muslim Palestinians would exceed the number of Jews
living in Palestine. ..OY VEY......

The Jews considered Madagascar at one time. So did Hitler.

Madagascar Plan
Post by Billzz
From Jennifer Rosenberg,
Your Guide to 20th Century History.

Before the Nazis decided to murder European Jewry in gas chambers,
they considered the Madagascar Plan - a plan to move four million Jews
from Europe to the island of Madagascar.

Whose idea was it?

Like almost all Nazi ideas, someone else came up with the idea first.
As early as 1885, Paul de Lagarde suggested deporting Eastern European
Jews to Madagascar. In 1926 and 1927, Poland and Japan each
investigated the possibility of using Madagascar for solving their
over-population problems.

It wasn't until 1931 that a German publicist wrote: "the entire Jewish
nation sooner or later must be confined to an island. This would
afford the possibility of control and minimize the danger of
infection."1 Yet the idea of sending Jews to Madagascar was still not
a Nazi plan.

Poland was the next to seriously consider the idea; they even sent a
commission to Madagascar to investigate.

The Commission

In 1937, Poland sent a commission to Madagascar to determine the
feasibility of forcing Jews to emigrate there. Members of the
commission had very different conclusions. The leader of the
commission, Major Mieczyslaw Lepecki, believed that it would be
possible to settle 40,000 to 60,000 people in Madagascar. Two Jewish
members of the commission didn't agree with this assessment. Leon
Alter, the director of the Jewish Emigration Association (JEAS) in
Warsaw, believed only 2,000 people could be settled there. Shlomo Dyk,
an agricultural engineer from Tel Aviv, estimated even fewer.

Even though the Polish government thought Lepecki's estimate was too
high and even though the local population of Madagascar demonstrated
against an influx of immigrants, Poland continued its discussions with
France (Madagascar was a French colony) over this issue.

It wasn't until 1938, a year after the Polish commission, that the
Nazis began to suggest the Madagascar Plan.

Nazi Preparations

In 1938 and 1939, Nazi Germany tried to use the Madagascar Plan for
financial and foreign policy arrangements.

On November 12, 1938, Hermann Goering told the German Cabinet that
Hitler was going to suggest to the West the emigration of Jews to
Madagascar. Hjalmar Schacht, Reichsbank president, during discussions
in London, tried to procure and international loan to send the Jews to
Madagascar (Germany would make a profit since the Jews would only be
allowed to take their money out in German goods). In December 1939,
Joachim von Ribbentrop, the German foreign minister, even included the
emigration of Jews to Madagascar as part of a peace proposal to the
pope.

Since Madagascar was still a French colony during these discussions,
Germany had no way to enact their proposals without France's approval.
The beginning of World War II ended these discussions but after
France's defeat in 1940, Germany no longer needed to coordinate with
the West about their plan

It's not to late'
Madagascar is a beautiful island, ringed by golden beaches and palm
trees, and with an interior that is resplendent in its variety, from
grassy plateaus to volcanoes and opaque forests and natural reserves.
Much nicer environment than Israel

According to local legend, the island was first inhabited by the
Vazimba, a race of white pygmies. According to some political and
religious theories, these pygmies, wherever they are today, could
claim that Madagascar is their promised land and evict the present
residents like the Jews did in Palestine. These people, if they
existed, were displaced by successive waves of Polynesian migrants
from the Malayo-Indonesian archipelago, from as early as the sixth
century AD. In the ninth century, Madagascar was a major trading power
in the western Indian Ocean. Moreover, ancient ruins indicate an
extensive Arab presence on the island around that time. Bantu tribes
from mainland Africa later settled on the west coast. The first
Europeans arrived in the mid-17th century. Several French settlements
were established on the south-east coast but were destroyed within 30
years.

Back to Palestine.
Ottoman Period 1517-1917 CE

Image:Ottoman empire 1481-1683. (1923 map) In 1516 the Ottoman Turks
occupied PALESTINE. The country became part of the Ottoman Empire.
Constantinople appointed local governors. Public works, including the
city walls, were rebuilt in Jerusalem by Suleiman the Magnificent in
1537. An area around Tiberias was given to Don Joseph HaNasi for a
Jewish enclave. Following the expulsions from Spain, the Jewish
population of Palestine rose to around 25% (includes non-Ottoman
citizens, excludes Bedouin) and regained its former stronghold of
Eastern Galilee. That ended in 1660 when they were massacred at Safed
and Jerusalem. During the reign of Dahar al Omar, Pasha of the
Galilee, Jews from Ukraine began to resettle Tiberias.

Napoleon of France briefly waged war against the Ottoman Empire
(allied then with Great Britain). His forces conquered and occupied
cities in Palestine, but they were finally defeated and driven out by
1801. In 1799 Napoleon announced a plan to re-establish a Jewish State
in Palestine which was mostly to curry favour with Haim Farkhi the
Jewish finance minister and advisor to the Pasha of Syria/Palestine.
He was later assassinated and his brothers formed an army with Ottoman
permission to conquer the Galilee. Turkish rule lasted until World War
I.

Jewish immigration to PALESTINE, particularly to the "four sacred
cities" (Jerusalem, Safed, Tiberias and Hebron) which already had
significant Jewish communities, increased particularly towards the end
of Ottoman rule; Jews of European origin lived mostly off donations
from off-country, while many Sephardic Jews found themselves a trade.
Many Circassians and Bosnian Muslims were settled in the north of
Palestine by the Ottomans in the early 19th Century. In the 1830's
Egypt conquered Palestine and made some minor improvements and many
Egyptians, in particular soldiers, settled there. It was however
during this period that the Jews of Safed were massacred in 1831 by
Druzes. Safed was resettled with Kurds and Algerians. This was
followed in 1837 by earthquakes in Safed and Tiberias. In 1838
Palestine was returned to the Turks.

Modern Period
British Mandate Period 1917-1948 CE
Main article: British Mandate of Palestine
The rise of Zionism, a political movement started in Europe and Russia
in the 19th century seeking to create a Jews homeland in Palestine,
increased the trend of Jewish immigration. By 1920, the Jewish
population of Palestine had reached 11% of the population (Ottoman
citizens only. Includes Bedouin. Includes Transjordan).[3]

Palestine and Transjordan were incorporated (under different legal and
administrative arrangements) into the Mandate for Palestine, issued by
the League of Nations to Great Britain on 29 September, 1923.In World
War I, Turkey sided with Germany. As a result, it was embroiled in a
conflict with Great Britain, leading to the British capture of
Palestine in a series of battles led by General Allenby. (See Third
Battle of Gaza and Battle of Beersheba). Allenby famously dismounted
from his horse when he entered captured Jerusalem as a mark of respect
for the Holy City. He was greeted by the Christian, Jewish, and
Islamic leaders of the city with great honor.

At the subsequent 1919 Paris Peace Conference and Treaty of
Versailles, Turkey's loss of its Middle East empire was formalized.
The British had in the interim made two agreements. In the Hussein-
McMahon Correspondence there was an undertaking to form an Arab state
in exchange for the Great Arab Revolt and in the Balfour Declaration
in 1917 to "favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home
for the Jewish people" while respecting the rights of existing non-
Jewish communities".

McMahon's promises are seen by Arab nationalists as a pledge of
immediate Arab independence, an undertaking violated by the region's
subsequent partition into British and French League of Nations
mandates under the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement of May 1916 which
became the real cornerstone of the geopolitics structuring the entire
region. Prior to the conference Emir Faisal, British ally and son of
the king of the Hijaz, had agreed in the Faisal-Weizmann Agreement to
support the immigration of Jews into Palestine and the creation of a
Jewish state in Palestine, while creating a large Arab state based in
Syria. When the conference did not produce that Arab state, Faisal
called instead for Palestine to become part of his new Arab Syrian
kingdom.

In 1920 the Allied Supreme Council meeting at San Remo offered a
Mandate for Palestine to Great Britain, but the borders and terms
under which the mandate was to be held were not finalised until
September 1922. Article 25 of the mandate specified that the eastern
area (then known as Transjordan or Transjordania) did not have to be
subject to all parts of the Mandate, notably the provisions regarding
a Jewish national home. This was used by the British as one rationale
to establish an Arab state, which it saw as at least partially
fulfilling the undertakings in the Hussein-McMahon Correspondence. On
11 April 1921 the British passed administration of the eastern region
to the Hashemite Arab dynasty from the Hejaz what later became part of
Saudi Arabia as the Emirate of Transjordan and on 15 May 1923
recognized it as a state.

Under the Mandate, Jewish immigration to Cisjordan Palestine increased
substantially with a rise in Jewish nationalism, which encouraged
Zionism, a return to the ancient land of the Jews. Between 1922 and
1946, Jews went from less than 11% to 33%[3] of the rapidly expanding
population, due in part to an influx of Jewish refugees from Nazism in
Europe and the refusal of the USA, France, Britain and other countries
to allow Jewish immigration.

Palestinian Arab leaders strongly opposed the immigration. In 1936 the
British Peel Commission advised that the western part of Palestine be
divided between Arabs and Jews. The Arabs then launched the Great
Uprising against British rule in an effort to end the immigration. The
Jews, for their part, organized militia groups like the Irgun and Lehi
to fight the British and the Haganah and Palmach to fight the Arabs.
By the time order was restored in March of 1939, more than 5,000
Arabs, 400 Jews, and 200 Britons were killed.

Israeli Period 1948 CE-Present

The UN Partition PlanJewish State of Israel

Soon after World War II, the British decided to leave Palestine. The
United Nations attempted to solve the dispute by putting forward the
1947 UN Partition Plan, dividing the land area between the two
populations, on November 29, 1947; the Jewish Agency accepted the
plan, while the Palestinian Arabs, along with their allies elsewhere
in the Arab world, rejected it as inadequate. The Arab-Jewish fighting
within Palestine escalated to full-scale war right after the UN
partition plan was approved, and on May 14, 1948, the Jewish
population declared independence as the state of Israel. The armies of
Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria then invaded, but did not
succeed even in holding onto much of the areas reserved in the UN
partition plan for the Arab state. (For a more detailed account, see
1948 Arab-Israeli War). Large numbers of Palestinian Arabs fled or
were expelled from their homes during the fighting and to this day
most have not been allowed to return (see 1948 Palestinian exodus).
Israel managed to maintain its independence and even expand its
borders, but a new refugee problem, this one of Palestinian Arabs, was
created, and was compounded by Jewish exodus from Arab lands.

What remained of the territories allotted to the Arab state in
Palestine was annexed by Jordan (the West Bank) or occupied by Egypt
(the Gaza Strip) from 1948 to 1967.

Following threats by Egypt and Syria, backed by Egyptian president
Nasser's request to UN to remove its peace-keeping troops from the
Egyptian-Israeli border, in June 1967 Israeli forces, supplied by
American money and arms, went to action against Egypt and Syria, and,
after failing to persuade it to stay out of the conflict, Jordan, in
what has come to be known as the Six-Day War. As a result of that war,
the Israel Defense Forces occupied the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Golan
Heights, and the Sinai Peninsula bringing them under military rule.
The United Nation's Security Council passed Resolution 242, promoting
the "land for peace" formula, which called for Israeli withdrawal from
territories occupied in 1967 in return for the end of all states of
belligerency. Since that time, the Palestinians refugees have
struggled to assert their own independence, either in all the
territories of Palestine or in the West Bank and Gaza Strip
particularly. In the course of 1973 Yom Kippur War, the forces of
Egypt and Syria were pushed back. Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula
to Egypt as part of the 1978 Camp David Peace Accords between Egypt
and Israel.

[edit] Oslo Peace Accords, Intifada, Separation Barrier, Road Map 1993
CE-Present

Map of Israel, the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan HeightsAfter the
First Intifada, attempts at the peace process in the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict were made at the Madrid Conference of 1991. As
the process progressed, in 1993 the Israelis allowed Chairman and
President of the Palestine Liberation Organization Yassir Arafat to
return to the region.

Following the historic 1993 Oslo Peace Accords between Palestinians
and Israel (the "Oslo Accords"), which gave the Palestinians limited
self-government in some parts of the Occupied Territories through the
Palestinian Authority, and other detailed negotiations, proposals for
a Palestinian state gained momentum. They were soon followed in 1994
by the Israel-Jordan Treaty of Peace. An attempt was made to end the
struggle at the Camp David 2000 Summit between Palestinians and Israel
but no agreement was reached. To date, efforts to resolve the conflict
have ended in deadlock, and the people of Palestine, Jews and Arabs,
are engaged in a bloody conflict, called variously the "Arab-Israeli
conflict" or "Israeli-Palestinian conflict".
Post by Billzz
From 1987 to 1993, the First Palestinian Intifada against Israel took
place. After few years of on-and-off negotiations, the second Intifada
erupted in 2000. This was known as the Al-Aqsa Intifada and began
after a controversial visit by Likud party chairman Ariel Sharon (who
subsequently became Israel's Prime Minister) to the Temple Mount in
Jerusalem - holy to both Jews and Muslims. The events were highlighted
by Palestinian suicide bombing in Israel that killed many civilians,
and by Israeli Security Forces invasions and targeted killings of
Palestinian militant leaders and organizers during which many
Palestinian civilians were also killed or injured. Israel began
building a complex separation barrier to separate itself from the West
Bank in 2002.

Also in 2002, the Road map for peace calling for the resolution of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict was proposed by a "quartet": the United
States, European Union, Russia, and United Nations. U.S. President
George W. Bush in a speech on June 24, 2002 called for an independent
Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace. Bush was
the first U.S. President to explicitly call for such a Palestinian
state.

The approved barrier route as of May 2005According to Israel's
unilateral disengagement plan of 2004, it withdrew all settlers and
most of the military presence from the Gaza strip, but maintained
control of the air space and coast. Israel also dismantled four
settlements in northern West Bank in September 2005. Following
Israel's withdrawal, some Palestinian groups failed to abide by a
'calming' (de facto ceasefire) negotiated with Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas. Palestinian militia groups fired Qassam rockets into
Israel and attempted to smuggle additional weapons and ammunition into
Gaza from Egypt. After 2 Israeli soldiers were killed and one was
kidnapped by Palestinian militants in the 6th of June 2006, Israel
launched a military operation and reentered to some parts of the Gaza
Strip.

Many people suspect that the Israel doesn't want a fair and lasting peace
settlement - mistreating the Palestinians keeps them stirred up and their
reaction provides the excuse for occupying their lands and the continuation
of American funding.

Many people suspect that the Israel doesn't want a fair and lasting peace
settlement - mistreating the Palestinians keeps them stirred up and their
reaction provides the excuse for occupying their lands and the
continuation of American funding.
I think the more secularist Israelis are looking for the peace solution.
The zionists are determined to fight for what they believe is rightfully
given to them by God.

A few points for your edification:

1. Menachim Begin is a polititian - you can't depend on what a polititian
says.
2..Israel doesn't want Eqypt's land or water - so the comparison is
laughable.
3. If Arafat had signed a treaty with the country that was stealing
Palestinian land and killing Palestinian children would have been suicide
(not murder)

Haven't you ever noticed how each cycle of violence starts with some Israli
attrocity?
It settles down for a while and then some IDF gunner "without orders" kills
a family on a beach, some kids asleep in their beds, a taxi driver.
and then, guess what? People react.

Israel doesn't want peace at any cost - her only natural resource is
American funding and that would dry up if real peace broke out.

Well, you have not edified me. I've been there several times, in addition
to the National War College study group that went to Egypt (met with Sadat),
Israel (met with Begin) and Jordan (met with the Crown Prince.) And we
listened to the Mayor of Bethlehem as well as visiting the refugee camps.
Along the way my wife and I have hosted Egyptian generals in our house, and
visited Egyptian families in Cairo. Also an Israeli family in Jerusalem.

Anyway, I've learned that no one "learns" anything about the middle east.
Everybody already knows everything that there is to know. You "know"
everything that has been said to you, that you agree with. I left arguing
about this subject years ago. It is what it is. If "they" want to change
things, "they" can. I can't.

Many people suspect that the Israel doesn't want a fair and lasting
peace settlement - mistreating the Palestinians keeps them stirred up
and their reaction provides the excuse for occupying their lands and
the continuation of American funding.
That's not what Menachim Begin said to our US National War College study
group. He said that if they recognized Israel, and signed a peace
treaty, they would have had what they wanted years ago. Egypt did.
They got what they wanted. Yasser Arafat said to president Clinton, "If
I sign a peace treaty, will you come to my funeral?"
Haven't you ever noticed how each cycle of violence starts with some
Israli attrocity?
It settles down for a while and then some IDF gunner "without orders"
kills a family on a beach, some kids asleep in their beds, a taxi driver.
and then, guess what? People react.
Israel doesn't want peace at any cost - her only natural resource is
American funding and that would dry up if real peace broke out.
Well, you have not edified me. I've been there several times, in addition
to the National War College study group that went to Egypt (met with
Sadat), Israel (met with Begin) and Jordan (met with the Crown Prince.)
And we listened to the Mayor of Bethlehem as well as visiting the refugee
camps. Along the way my wife and I have hosted Egyptian generals in our
house, and visited Egyptian families in Cairo. Also an Israeli family in
Jerusalem.
Anyway, I've learned that no one "learns" anything about the middle east.
People have opinions and opinions are formed on what is learnt

Answer: IRAN
Perhaps this is merely the efforts of a deluded psyche.. The other
possiblilty is that this is actually a pro-Iranian scheme.

Starting to see a pattern here?

Typical anti-Israel propaganda. Israel has probably had nukes since the
mid-60s and has she used them on anyone? NO!
Golda Meir, Israeli PM, considered using nukes against Egypt and Syria
during the '73 War but Nixon and Brezhnev stepped
in and brokered a cease fire.
